Caraway Speedway was built in 1966 as a dirt track near Asheboro, North Carolina. The track was paved in 1972 and joined the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series family as a 0.455 mile asphalt short track. Russell and Valastra Hackett owned and operated the facility from 1977 to 2010. Darren and Renee Hackett took over operations for the 2011 season. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, future NASCAR stars competed in Late Model competition at Caraway. Champions during those years included Bobby Labonte, Mike Skinner, and three-time titlist Dennis Setzer.
Located at 2518 Race Track Road Ext in Sophia, North Carolina, near Asheboro, the 0.455 mile asphalt oval hosts Saturday night events at 7:00 pm to allow fans time with their favorite drivers after races.
Caraway Speedway hosted 3 NASCAR Busch Series races from 1982 to 1983 and 8 NASCAR Southeast Series events between 1996 and 2005. The facility hosted 60 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour events from the inaugural season in 2005 until the series’ final season in 2016. The speedway currently hosts NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly racing along with various touring series including CARS Tour and SMART Modified Tour events.
